Allan Stewart, an Australian born on March 7, 1915, gained his first degree in 1936. Firmly holding the view that it’s never too late to learn and one shouldn’t stop challenging himself, he got another degree—a Doctor of Medicine by great efforts. In his eighties, he decided to study law and in 2006, he became the oldest man in the world who received a master’s degree. Six years later, he received his fourth degree by studying on the Internet and his teacher praised him a lot for his arrangement for time. Allan Stewart really sets a good example to others.

The burden of students has been a hot topic for years, but the load of parents has received little attention, especially from their own children.

The picture shows a touching moment when a little girl comes to greet her working mom. Realizing her mom must be very tired after a day’s work, the girl helps to remove the bag from her shoulders. In response, the mom kneels down to show how happy and thankful she feels.

All this reminds me of my mother who has been doing whatever she could to let me have the best. However, totally engaged in my own study, I seldom pay attention to what mother needs and feels, and always think studying is the only thing I could do in return. Now I know I can do my bit to help with the everyday washing, bedroom cleaning, or at least prepare breakfast myself, so as to share mother’s daily burden. The picture convinces me it is even more important to be a good daughter than a “good” student.

Mind Your Behavior in Public Places

Last Sunday, I went sightseeing with my friends in the Fairy Lake Park. The park was full of freshness and beauty of spring, with the sun shining and birds singing. When I was enjoying the fantastic scenery around, something unpleasant caught my eye. A young couple in a boat were eating, talking and laughing loudly as if they were the only people in the world. What's worse, they spat and even threw rubbish into the lake, totally ignoring the noticeable sign "No Littering" nearby. What a shame!

Such behavior left me deep in thought. If all visitors to the Fairy Lake Park do as the couple did, the lake will be severely polluted and soon turned into a huge dustbin. I think all of us should mind our behavior in public places. Only in this way can we live in more comfortable and beautiful surroundings.

I have a precious pen, which was given to me as a birthday present by one of my best friends. I like it very much. However, this pen once has an unusual experience.

When I was a student of Grade Two, I lost my precious pen because of carelessness when our school was holding a sports meeting. I almost felt crazy when I realized that it was missing. I searched the playground carefully and even the road leading to my home. I put up several notices with their titles—My Precious Pen Lost, in which I promised to pay the one who gives the pen back to me 100 yuan. Several days later, I heard my name called by someone. It was a girl with a pen in her hand. I felt excited to see my precious pen back. I thanked this kind girl again and again, who didn’t accept the money I gave her as a reward.

From the unusual experience of my precious pen, I learn that we should be thankful to those who always do good deeds and also be ready to do what we can to help others.

Dear Sir or Madam,

I'm Li Hua, a middle school student from China. I read the announcement of the summer camp that you have posted on the Internet and I am interested in it. I know that you welcome students from different countries and I'd like to take part in it. I've been learning English for 10 years, and I speak fluent English. What is more, I'JI be able to tell students from other countries about China and learn about their countries as well. I hope I will be accepted as a member of your summer camp.

Looking forward to your reply!

Regards,

Li Hua

I Like Reading

Reading is my favorite hobby. I can never stop the love for reading because books are like wise teachers as well as good friends in my life. As we know, books are the source of knowledge. I benefit a great deal from reading.

There are a variety of books for us to choose from, like history books, science books, literary books and so on. But what interest me most are literary books, especially those by famous writers. For one thing, they help to improve my writing skills and broaden my horizons. For another, they can enrich my life and provide me with great fun. Isn’t it a pleasure to have great calm in mind while you are reading?

You are discussing the following picture with your English friend Jim. Now you are telling him how you understand the picture and what makes you think so.

I think the white pencil, looking proud and delighted, is laughing at the black pencil by saying “You’re nearing the end!” The black pencil, on the other hand, remains calm. The white pencil’s words let him fall into deep thoughts. He clearly remembers he has been used in writing and drawing. It’s true that he’s approaching the end but he has been living a memorable life and there has rarely been a dull moment.

In reality, we should learn from the black pencil: not to mind what others say so long as we are confident in what we’ve done.

Conflicts with others are common in everyday life. During the basketball game yesterday afternoon, Su Hua and Li Jiang bumped into each other, trying to catch the ball. Then they started shouting and yelling, and it turned into a horrible quarrel.

To be honest, it was Su Hua’s fault but Li was also to blame—they were not calm enough and both said some really mean things. They cared too much about winning and losing. As a matter of fact, blocking, pushing and bumping are just part of a tough game.

To avoid such conflicts, we should be kind to one another, which is essential to enjoying a harmonious life. It is also a virtue to forgive and forget, especially in such a competitive and stressful society. Instead of blaming each other, we should communicate more and put ourselves in others’ place.

Don’t be self-centered and try to be considerate. We must learn to handle conflicts calmly and wisely.

I was on my way to the bookstore and was waiting for the green light at a crossing when a girl of about ten was knocked down by a passing car, which drove off quickly. A man immediately rushed to the girl to give her first aid and I joined in without hesitation. Luckily she was not badly injured and we sent her to the nearest hospital. Compared with the escaped driver, I am proud of what I did.As a member of the society, I am aware that being responsible is what it takes to make a better society.

Today, when I awoke,I suddenly realized that this is the best day of my life, ever! There were times when I wondered if I would make it to today; but I did!And because I did I'm going to celebrate!Today,I'm going to celebrate what an unbelievable life I have had so far:the acplishments, the many blessings, and, yes, even the hardships because they have served to make me stronger.I will go through this day with my head held high, and a happy heart.I will marvel at God's seemingly simple gifts:the morning dew,the sun,the clouds, the trees, the flowers, the birds.Today, none of these miraculous creations will escape my notice.Today,I will share my excitement for life with other people.I'll make someone *** ile.I'll go out of my way to perform an unexpected act of kindness for someone I don't even know.Today,I'll give a sincere pliment to someone who seems down.I'll tell a child how special he is,and I'll tell someone I love just how deeply I care for her and how much she means to me.Today is the day I quit worrying about what I don't have and start being grateful for all the wonderful things God has already given me.I'll remember that to worry is just a waste of time because my faith in God and his Divine Plan ensures everything will be just fine. And tonight, before I go to bed,I'll go outside and raise my eyes to the heavens.I will stand in awe at the beauty of the stars and the moon, and I will praise God for these magnificent treasures. As the day ends and I lay my head down on my pillow,I will thank the Almighty for the best day of my life. And I will sleep the sleep of a contented child, excited with expectation because I know tomorrow is going to be the best day of my life, ever!

The important thing is to learn to control your temper so that you may not do or say anything you'll regret. Here are three useful tips:First, talk to someone you trust about how you feel.

Where there is a will, there is a way. My favorite proverb is “where there is a will, there is a way.”, which means we will be able to get over all kinds of challenges if we can stick to our dreams and never give up. Memories rushed to my mind when I saw this topic. When I was in high school, I had great enthusiasm for English and intended to take part in an English speech contest. However, when preparing for it, I found it very challenging to collect information and use language correctly. I was about to give up when my Dad noticed and offered this proverb to me. Encouraged by it, I spared no effort to solve every problem with confidence. If it hadn’t helped me,I couldn’t have won the prize finally. In a word, not only does this proverb enable me to face up to the difficulties bravely, but also it contributes much to keeping confident all the time. Therefore, keep in mind--- where there is a will, there is a way. Success comes to those who never give up.
