Some farmers in California are having a hard time picking their crops. There are not enough workers to help them with the harvest.

One farmer used to grow peaches(桃子) , but will soon grow almonds(杏仁) instead.Peaches require more labor to harvest. They are easy to be damaged and need careful hand picking. He is now removing his peachtree s.Then he will plant almond trees in their places.Almonds are harvested differently. It does not take as many workers to pick them because a machine shakes the almond trees. The nuts fallon the ground and then are gathered up.The farmer does not have to hire many workers.

Some farmers think there are two reasons why they can't find enough farmworkers. One reason is that there area lot of well-paid construction jobs in the area. Many people are taking these jobs instead of picking fruit. The other reason is that it has become more difficult for workers to come from Mexico into California.Fewer workers are allowed to get into the country to work on the fruit farms. To settle the problem, farmers hope the government might allow these workers to work as guests. That would help workers provide for their family and help farmers harvest their crops. When the harvest season is over they'll go back home.Farmers say that unless things change, more fruits will come from other countries. This is because labor is cheaper in those countries than in the United States.

Scientists have long tried to be able to know more about floods. So far, the best that scientists can do is to recognize the conditions for flooding.

Although deep snow alone seldom causes floods, when it occurs together with heavy rain and sudden warmer weather, it can lead to serious flooding. If there is a fast snowmelt(融化) on top of frozen or very wet ground, flooding is likely to occur.Me ling snow also causes highwater levels in rivers. Whenever rivers are already at their highest possible levels, heavy rains will result in the rivers'flooding the nearby land.

Rivers covered in ice can also lead to flooding. When ice begins to melt, it breaks into large pieces. These pieces of ice move and float down the river. They can block the river, causing the water to rise and flood the land up the river. If the iced am(坝) breaks suddenly, the large quantity of water held behind it can flood the areas down the river too.

Broken ice dams are not the only problem that can cause flooding. When a large human-made dam breaks or fails to hold the water collected behind it, it will also cause serious damage.

Although scientists can not always know when floods will occur, they do know a great deal about when floods are likely, or probably, going to occur.

 B

Once when I was facing a decision that involved high risk, I went to a friend. He looked at me for a moment, and then wrote a sentence containing the best advice I?ve ever had: Be bold and brave ? and mighty (强大的) forces will come to your aid.

Those words made me see clearly that when I had fallen short in the past, it was seldom because I had tried and failed. It was usually because I had let fear of failure stop me from trying at all. On the other hand, whenever I had plunged into deep water, forced by courage or circumstance, I had always been able to swim until I got my feet on the ground again.

Boldness means a decision to bite off more than you can eat. And there is nothing mysterious about the mighty forces. They are potential powers we possess: energy, skill, sound judgment, creative ideas ? even physical strength greater than most of us realize.

Admittedly, those mighty forces are spiritual ones. But they are more important than physical ones. A college classmate of mine, Tim, was an excellent football player, even though he weighed much less than the average player. ?In one game I suddenly found myself confronting a huge player, who had nothing but me between him and our goal line,? said Tim. ?I was so frightened that I closed my eyes and desperately threw myself at that guy like a bullet ? and stopped him cold.?

Boldness ? a willingness to extend yourself to the extreme?is not one that can be acquired overnight. But it can be taught to children and developed in adults. Confidence builds up. Surely, there will be setbacks (挫折) and disappointments in life; boldness in itself is no guarantee of success. But the person who tries to do something and fails is a lot better off than the person who tries to do nothing and succeeds.

So, always try to live a little bit beyond your abilities?and you?ll find your abilities are greater than you ever dreamed.

 25. Why was the author sometimes unable to reach his goal in the past?

 A. He faced huge risks. B. He lacked mighty forces.

 C. Fear prevented him from trying. D. Failure blocked his way to success.

 26. What is the implied meaning of the underlined part?

 A. Swallow more than you can digest. B. Act slightly above your abilities.

 C. Develop more mysterious powers. D. Learn to make creative decisions.

 27. What can be learned from Paragraph 5?

 A. Confidence grows more rapidly in adults. B. Trying without success is meaningless.

 C. Repeated failure creates a better life. D. Boldness can be gained little by little.

 C

The wallet is heading for extinction. As a day-to-day essential, it will die off with the generation who read print newspapers. The kind of shopping-where you hand over notes and count out change in return?now happens only in the most minor of our retail encounters, like buying a bar of chocolate or a pint of milk from a corner shop. At the shops where you spend any real money, that money is increasingly abstracted. And this is more and more true, the higher up the scale you go. At the most cutting-edge retail stores?Victoria Beckham on Dover Street, for instance?you don't go and stand at any kind of cash register when you decide to pay. The staff are equipped with iPads to take your payment while you relax on a sofa.

Which is nothing more or less than excellent service, if you have the money. But across society, the abstraction(抽象) of the idea of cash makes me uneasy. Maybe I'm just old-fashioned. But earning money isn't quick or easy for most of us. Isn't it a bit incredible that spending it should happen in half a blink(眨眼)of an eye? Doesn't a wallet?that time-honoured Friday-night feeling of pleasing, promising fatness?represent something that matters?

But I'll leave the economics to the experts. What bothers me about the death of the wallet is the change it represents in our physical environment. Everything about the look and feel of a wallet?the way the fastenings and materials wear and tear and loosen with age, the plastic and paper and gold and silver, and handwritten phone numbers and printed cinema tickets?is the very opposite of what our world is becoming. The opposite of a wallet is a smartphone or an iPad. The rounded edges, cool glass, smooth and unknowable as pebble(鹅卵石). Instead of digging through pieces of paper and peering into corners, we move our fingers left and right. No more counting out coins. Show your wallet, if you still have one. It may not be here much longer.

 28. What is happening to the wallet?

 A. It is disappearing. B. It is being fattened.

 C. It is becoming costly. D. It is changing in style.

 29. What makes the author feel uncomfortable nowadays?

 A. Saving money is becoming a thing of the past.

 B. The pleasing Friday-night feeling is fading.

 C. Earning money is getting more difficult.

 D. Spending money is so fast and easy.

 30. Why does the author choose to write about what's happening to the wallet?

 A. It represents a change in the modern world.

 B. It has something to do with everybody's life.

 C. It marks the end of a time-honoured tradition.

 D. It is the concern of contemporary economists.

 31. What can we infer from the passage about the author?

 A. He is resistant to social changes.

 B. He is against technological progress.

 C. He feels reluctant to part with the traditional wallet.

 D. He feels insecure in the ever-changing modern world.

I found out one time that doing a favor for someone could get you into a lot of trouble. I was in the eighth grade at the time, and we were having a final test. During the test, the girl sitting next to me whispered something, but I didn?t understand. So I leaned over her way and found out that she was trying to ask me if I had an extra pen. She showed me that hers was out of ink and would not write. I happened to have an extra one, so I took it out of my pocket and put it on her desk.

Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed. As soon as we were alone she began to talk to me about what it meant to grow up; she talked about how important it was to stand on your own two feet and be responsible (负责任) for your own acts. For a long time, she talked about honesty and emphasized the fact that when people do something dishonest, they are really cheating themselves. She made me promise that I would think seriously about all the things she had said, and then she told me I could leave. I walked out of the room wondering why she had chosen to talk to me about all those things.

Later on, I found out that she thought I had cheated on the test. When she saw me lean over to talk to the girl next to me, it looked as if I was copying answers from the girl?s test paper. I tried to explain about the pen, but all she could say was it seemed very very strange to her that I hadn?t talked of anything about the pen the day she talked to me right after the test. Even if I tried to explain that I was just doing the girl a favor by letting her use my pen, I am sure she continued to believe that I had cheated on the test.

Later, after the test papers had been turned in, the teacher asked me to stay in the room when all the other students were dismissed.

To be a good teacher, you need some of the gifts of a good actor; you must be able to hold the attention and interest of your audience; you must be a clear speaker, with a good, strong, pleasing voice which is fully under your control; and you must be able to act what you are teaching, in order to make its meaning clear.

Watch a good teacher, and you will see that he does not sit still before his class: he stands the whole time he is teaching; he walks about, using his arms, hands and fingers to help him in his explanations, and his face to express feelings. Listen to him, and you will hear the loudness, the quality (音色) and the musical note of his voice always changing according to what he is talking about.

The fact that a good teacher has some of the gifts of a good actor doesn?t mean that he will indeed be able to act well on the stage, for there are very important differences between the teacher?s work and the actor?s. The actor has to speak words which he has learnt by heart; he has to repeat exactly the same words each time he plays a certain part, even his movements and the ways in which he uses his voice are usually fixed beforehand (预先). What he has to do is to make all these carefully learnt words and actions seem natural on the stage.

A good teacher works in quite a different way. His audience takes an active part in his play: they ask and answer questions, they obey orders, and if they don?t understand something, they say so. The teacher therefore has to meet the needs of his audience, which is his class. He cannot learn his part by heart, but must invent it as he goes along.

I have known many teachers who were fine actors in class but were unable to take part in a stage-play because they could not keep strictly to what another had written.

 1. What is the text about ?

 A. How to become a good teacher.

 B. What a good teacher should do outside the classroom.

 C. What teachers and actors could learn from each other.

 D. The similarities(相似处) and differences between a teacher?s work and an actor?s.

 2. The word ?audience? in the fourth paragraph means ____ .

 A. students B. people who watch a play

 C. people who not on the stage D. people who listen to something

 3. A good teacher ____ .

 A. knows how to hold the interest of his students B. must have a good voice

 C. knows how to act on the stage D. stands or sits still while teaching

 4. In what way is a teacher?s work different from an actor?s ?

 A. The teacher must learn everything by heart .

 B. He knows how to control his voice better than an actor .

 C. He has to deal with unexpected situations .

 D. He has to use more facial expressions .

 5. The main difference between students in class and a theatre audience is that ____.

 A. students can move around in the classroom

 B. students must keep silent while theatre audience needn?t

 C. no memory work is needed for the students

 D. the students must take part in their teachers? plays

 6. Why is it that some good teachers are unable to play well on the stage ?

 A. Nobody has taught them how to act on the stage .

 B. Their audiences are different .

 C. It is impossible for them to do so much memory work .

 D. They are not used to repeating exactly the same words .

 7. Which of the following is true ?

 A. Teachers have to learn by heart what they are going to say in class .

 B. A teacher cannot decide beforehand what exactly he is going to say in class .

 C. A teacher must speak louder than an actor .

 D. A teacher must have a better memory than an actor .

A teacher from a Western country has recently visited an elementary school in an Eastern country. In one class, she watched sixty young children as they learned to draw a cat. The teacher drew a big O on the blackboard, and the sixty students copied it on their paper. The teacher drew a smaller O on the top of the first O and then put two on top of it. The children drew in the same way. The lesson went on until there were sixty-one similar cats in the classroom. Each student?s cat looked exactly like the one on the board.

The visiting teacher watched the lesson and was greatly surprised because the teaching methods were very different from that in her own country. A children?s art lesson in her own country produced a roomful of pictures, and each is quite different from others. Why? What makes this difference? In a classroom in any country, a teacher teaches not only knowledge of history or language.

In some countries such as the United States and Canada etc, people think highly of individualism----the differences between people. The teachers think it very important to make each student different from others. Educational systems in these countries don?t ask students to memorize dull information. Instead, students are asked to work by themselves and find answers themselves. The students are helped to learn to have their own ideas even at an early age.

But in countries such as China and Japan, the two peoples have similar history and culture. Perhaps because of this, people think highly of group goals rather than individualism. Students in China and Japan often work together and help each other in the classroom, The teachers teach and the students listen. The students are asked to memorize a lot. They have to learn the same textbook. They do the same homework and give the same answers.
